Our Guidance Department
Welcome to The Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center Guidance Department. Our department oversees the registration, testing and placement of all of our students.

Registration for ESOL and GED Classes
The registration process takes place in the main office where the students pay their tuition. We have video orientation in the intake testing labs, which is implemented by the proctors. Students will need to bring their testing receipt to the labs.  After testing that day, they will receive their appointed date to pick up their class schedules. Placement is made on a space available basis. If classes are closed, students may be placed on a waiting list.

Starting the Process

To register for classes, all students need to go to the main office with any current official government photo ID and pay their tuition. Students can pay in cash or with a credit card. ESOL and GED students will then schedule their CASAS and TABE tests in the main office.

After Testing and Schedules
After testing, ESOL and GED students need to go to the main office to pick up their schedules on the stated day. Day classes meet Monday through Friday. Session I goes from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Session II goes from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The evening session meets from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.
Note: Class hours are subject to change to comply with COVID-19 restrictions.

GED / ABE Students Coming From High School
Students who are at least 16 years old may enroll in the GED / ABE program once they are officially withdrawn from their high school. If they want to take the GED exam they will need to complete the age wavier form at The official GED Test and the Pre-GED Test are taken online.

Regular Attendance is required to promote student progress and assure a student's seat in class. Ongoing assessments monitor a student's progress in their studies. After 70 hours of class instruction, an ESOL student is post-tested for academic gains. The GED-ABE student is post-tested after 60 hours of class instruction. A student is promoted based on standardized CASAS and TABE scores.

ESOL students take the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS). This test is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's level of English proficiency and is used for class placement. Once the student registers for the CASAS test, there is usually a 7day wait period to take the test. The CASAS test takes place over 2 days. The first day is reserved for a 1 hour orientation. On the second day, the student is tested on listening and reading skills which lasts 1-2 hours.

GED / ABE students take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This test is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's strengths and weaknesses which the teacher uses for academic planning. Once students register for the TABE Test, there is usually a 2-3 day wait period to take the test. Students need to allow 2-3 hours for the testing process which includes an orientation.

Starting Class at the Chuck Shaw TEC
The Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center has open enrollment so students can start anytime during the term. There are some exceptions. Classes start approximately 7 days after the completion of testing. The students are given their starting date the day of their test. Classes are scheduled year round with the exception of a four week break in the summer.

Student Photo IDs
Photo identification cards are taken everyday in the main office.  Students must wear their IDs at all times.
