Guidance Department

Our Guidance Department
Welcome to the Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center Guidance Department. Our department oversees the registration, testing, and placement of all of our students. Our Guidance Department is located in room 201 in the main building. It is open Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 8:30 PM and on Fridays from 8 AM to 3:00 PM. You can reach us directly at (561) 616-7813.

Registration for ESOL and GED Classes
The registration process takes place in the main office where the students pay their tuition and in testing where orientation is done. Both GED and ESOL students receive a student package to complete in orientation which includes the school registration form and the student handbook. The students will indicate during orientation which of the 3 sessions they would like to attend. The proctors help all students with the entire process. Students need to bring their official government-issued identification to the testing rooms. After testing, they will receive their class schedule on the appointed date. Placement is made on a space available basis. If classes are closed, students may be placed on a waiting list.

After Testing and Schedules
After ESOL and GED students take the CASAS and TABE tests, they need to report to the main office and pick up their schedules on the stated day. Day classes meet Monday through Friday. Session I goes from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Session II goes from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The evening session meets from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.

GED / ABE Students Coming From High School
Students who are at least 16 years old may enroll in the GED / ABE program once they are officially withdrawn from their high school. If they want to take the GED exam they will need to complete the age waiver form at The official GED Test and the Pre-GED Test are taken online.

Regular Attendance is required to promote student progress and assure a student's seat in the class. Ongoing assessments monitor a student's progress in their studies. After 70 hours of class instruction, an ESOL student is post-tested for academic gains. The GED-ABE student is post-tested after 60 hours of class instruction. A student is promoted based on standardized CASAS and TABE scores.

Starting the Process
To register for classes, all students need to go to the main office with any official government photo ID and pay their tuition. Students can pay in cash or with a credit card. ESOL students will then schedule their CASAS test in the main office. GED students will schedule their TABE test in the Guidance office.

ESOL students take the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS). This test is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's level of English proficiency and are used for class placement. Once the student registers for the CASAS test, there is usually a 7day wait period to take the test. The CASAS test takes place over 2 days. The first day is reserved for a 1-hour orientation. On the second day, the student is tested on listening and reading skills which last 1-2 hours.

GED / ABE students take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). This test is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's strengths and weaknesses which the teacher uses for academic planning. Once students register for the TABE Test, there is usually a 2-3 day wait period to take the test. Students need to allow 2-3 hours for the testing process which includes an orientation.

Starting Class at the AEC
The Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center has open enrollment so students can start anytime during the term. There are some exceptions. Classes start approximately 7 days after the completion of testing. The students are given their starting date the day of their test. Classes are scheduled year-round with the exception of a four-week break in the summer.

Student Photo IDs
Photo identification cards are taken every day in the Main Office. Students must wear their IDs at all times.
