ESOL Program

Our ESOL Program
Welcome to The Chuck Shaw Technical Educational Center ESOL Program. The goal of the ESOL program is to provide the opportunity for all students to acquire knowledge and develop English proficiency to succeed in life and work. Many of our ESOL students, after completing the program, continue their education by entering our GED program, and depending on their level, enter college.

Ability Levels
Classes are divided into 7 ability levels from beginning literacy to academic English. Students learn English through a variety of methods and materials including books, audiotapes, worksheets, videotapes, presentations, field day, and computers. Small and large group activities are provided within each class for speaking, reading, writing, and listening instruction and practice. We also have additional Listening Labs for students who qualify based on their reading level.

To register, come in to schedule an appointment for orientation and CASAS placement testing. You will need a valid government-issued picture identification. After testing, you will need to return for your class schedule on the appointed date. Placement is made on a space-available basis. If classes are closed, you may be placed on a waiting list.

Class Time - Schedules
After the student takes the CASAS test, the student needs to report to the Main office and pick up his or her schedule on the stated day. Day classes meet Monday through Friday. Session I goes from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Session II goes from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The evening session meets from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday.

Regular Attendance is required to promote student progress and assure a student's seat in class. Ongoing assessments monitor students' progress in their studies. After 70 hours of class instruction, the students are post-tested for academic gains. Students are promoted based on standardized CASAS scores.

Starting the Process
To register for ESOL classes first, go to the main office with your (any) official government photo ID and pay your tuition. After you pay your tuition, you will then be able to schedule your CASAS test.

The CASAS Test
The Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) is used for student placement and is completed on the computer. The results are an assessment of the student's level of English proficiency and is used for class placement. Once the student registers for the CASAS test, there is usually a 7 day wait period to take the test. The CASAS test takes place over 2 days. The first day is reserved for a 1-hour orientation. On the second day, the student is tested on listening and reading skills which last 1-2 hours.

Starting Class at The Chuck Shaw TEC
The Chuck Shaw Technical Education Center has open enrollment so students can start at different times during the term. There are testing restrictions. Classes start approximately 7 days after the completion of the CASAS test. The students are given their starting date the day of their test. Classes are scheduled year-round with the exception of a four-week break in the summer.
